How to Check Failed Payment Reasons in Stripe

Open the Stripe Dashboard

Navigate to dashboard.stripe.com and go to the Payments section.

Filter by Failed Status

Click the status filter and select Failed. This shows all payment attempts that didn’t go through.

Check Individual Failures

Click into each failed payment to see the decline code (e.g., card_declined, insufficient_funds, expired_card).

Export Failed Payments

Download the filtered list as CSV. The decline_code column contains the reason for each failure.

Categorize Failure Reasons

In your spreadsheet, group by decline code. Common reasons: insufficient funds, expired card, do not honor, fraud block.

Calculate Revenue Impact

Sum the amounts of failed payments to see total revenue at risk. Identify repeat failures for dunning opportunities.
